A first police action took place this Saturday at the Gare du Midi, after the federal government announced a series of measures to restore security in and around the station.

Around 60 people were arrested on Saturday morning during the police operation at Brussels-Midi station, said Sarah Frederickx, spokesperson for the Brussels-Midi police zone. This action is part of the actions decided on Friday aimed at improving the quality of life in the neighborhood.

The federal government has indeed announced a series of short and medium term measures to restore security in and around the Gare du Midi in Brussels. These efforts will be coordinated by the National Crisis Center.

A thirty people had already been arrested in the morning. These are mainly petty thefts or people residing illegally. A person was also arrested because he was reported to have escaped.

The Minister of the Interior, Annelies Verlinden (CD&V), went there on Saturday where she met several deployed police officers. “Such an operation has an immediate effect, but we cannot do it every day”, commented the Minister, underlining the “enormous” effort thus made. “After the distress signal launched by the SNCB and the Brussels-Capital Region, we wanted to quickly set up visible actions. A lasting solution is however necessary to solve the problems in the long term”, she added. , citing the problems of poverty, housing, addiction, degradation of infrastructure.
