After a test phase involving eight establishments, the City of Brussels decided on Monday to extend the use of washable and reusable nappies to 40 crèches under its management. Together, these reception centers produce nearly 1.2 million dirty diapers per year, for a total mass of around 240 tonnes, according to the alderman of Early Childhood Arnaud Pinxteren (Ecolo).

The municipal council has given the green light to the rental of nappies and transport bags as well as the recovery, cleaning and redistribution of nappies. An information campaign for crèche staff is also being launched.

The City had already launched a 12-month trial in October 2020 in two kindergartens. The contract has since been extended and six new crèches have been gradually included in the plan, Mr Pinxteren recalled.

The deployment of the hardware will cost 1.6 million euros over a period of 48 months. This system will, however, avoid the cost of waste collection, estimated at around 80,000 euros. Collection would take place at least every two working days and the washing and sterilization of nappies would have to be done in an environmentally friendly way, Pinxteren said.
