The Brussels firefighters had to come to the aid of a dozen students on Tuesday afternoon who found themselves stranded in an elevator at the Vandervelde metro station. The situation required the intervention of the RISC (Rescue In Safe Conditions) team, explains Walter Derieuw, spokesperson for the Brussels fire brigade.

“It was about ten students, all with hearing and speech impairments,” said the spokesperson. “The elevator company technician was unable to get the installation back into service within a reasonable time, so the fire brigade was called. The elevator doors opened on a wall in the elevator shaft , which is why we called on our RISC team, which specializes in mountain rescue techniques.”

“One of the team members was lowered to open the elevator doors and then hoisted the children, one by one, using a harness on the roof of the cabin. From there, they were able to join the ground floor using a ladder.

“The intervention took place calmly and the children are safe and sound”, continues Walter Derieuw. “The students were impressed by the means deployed, but they behaved courageously and scrupulously followed the instructions given with the help of panels. The origin of the technical incident remains to be determined.”
