Enhanced Train Offer and Future Plans for Public Transportation: SNCB’s Implementation of RailVision 2040 and 2023-2032 Contract

This new transport plan is part of the implementation of the 2023-2032 public services contract and the Rail 2040 vision, which provide for a strong increase in the train offer, of 7.4% in the number of train- kilometers (89 million in absolute number).

It will be deployed in four successive phases (December 2023, December 2024, June 2025 and December 2025). Ultimately, 205 stations will benefit from an increase in frequencies: 24 during the week, 109 at weekends and 72 during the week and at weekends. In addition, 105 stations will benefit from an extended range on Friday and Saturday.

From December, the cross-border offer will notably be improved from Liège with the creation of a new direct link between the burning city and Aachen via Maastricht.

The plan also provides for the long-term development of the suburban offer around Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Liège and Charleroi or even better service to Charleroi airport with a new IC link between Louvain and Charleroi via Ottignies and Fleurus.

“Who says more trains, says more customers for SNCB and more goods on the rails, says more revenue and more resources for SNCB and Infrabel”, comments Georges Gilkinet. “Together with the federal government, we want to put the train of tomorrow on the rails. The increase in the number of trains from December is a step in this direction, but it in no way removes the obligation for SNCB to improve punctuality in the very short term. »
