In the center of Brussels, Place Sainte-Catherine hosts a number of catering terraces. The extent they occupy sometimes comes into conflict with the needs of certain other users of public space. The observation is not new. It dates back to at least 2015. That year, the Free 54 collective (pronounced Free Saint-Cath) was created to denounce their encroachment on the rest of the square. And more generally to protest against the growing restrictions on its use.

“There was the observation that there was an ever-increasing number of terraces on the square, resulting in the oppression of users of public space. Some public benches had been removed, there were more public controls, public toilets removed, then put back. It started with a group of citizens who went to school and used the public space for what it is normally used for: eating their sandwich, even playing football, ”explains Léa, a member of the collective.
