Vivaldi could deliver a budget agreement tonight. It seems certain that the banks will be involved.
The federal government continued, early Sunday evening, its budgetary work. The Prime Minister, the Vice-Primes and the Secretary of State for the Budget are still in the delicate phase of arbitrations.
“It’s happening quite calmly, but we’re not there yet”
“It happens quite calm manner, but we are not there yet”, comments someone close to the discussions. If the questions of new income and savings occupied the Kern for a good part of the day, it seems that that of “new policies” has only been briefly discussed so far.
Agreement at the end of the night?
“The night could be long,” some observers whisper to us. Others temper it by specifying thatAlexander De Croo is only expected in the House on Tuesday for his traditional general policy declaration.
As a reminder, Vivaldi must find between 800 million and 1.2 billion euros in order to respect the commitments made within the framework of the Stability Pact which plans to bring the budget deficit below 3% of GDP in 2026 and thus avoid European wrath. To carry out its budgetary work, the government applies the three-thirds principle: one third revenue, one third expenditure, one third miscellaneous measures.
Banks involved
Mentioned during the week, the avenues of taxes on packaging and on plane tickets seem to have lead in the garlice. The extension of the tax on securities accounts, demanded by the PS but difficult to implement, is not faring much better. On the other hand, a strengthening of the Cayman tax seems likely.
Also very likely: banks will be involved. If the initial proposal to tax excess banking profits has “evolved a lot”, the desire to seek something from this sector persists. According to the feedback we have, between 100 and 300 million revenues are expected.
The cheese grater
In terms of savings, Vivaldi could seek to free up up to 400 million by focusing on underutilization of certain budgets (particularly in health) and technical corrections. For the rest, you will probably have to pass the cheese grater everywhere.
