Buffalo City closes beaches after fatal shark attack

A fatal shark attack off the southeastern coast of South Africa claimed the life of a 65-year-old woman Tuesday morning, prompting municipal authorities to close two local beaches indefinitely and open an official inquest into the incident.

Tragedy strikes the open-water swimming group

The attack occurred at approximately 7 a.m. at Orient Beach in KuGompo, a city formerly known as East London. The victim, described by fellow swimmer Mike Loewe as a musician and recently retired nuclear radiographer known for her courage and preference for solo swimming, was swimming with an open-water group when she signaled she was in distress.

Group members rushed to her aid, bringing her back to shore where a medic within the swimming party attempted to save her. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts, she was declared dead at the scene.

Police and witness accounts detail the severity of injuries

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Col. Siphokazi Mawisa confirmed that officers arrived to find the body bearing open wounds, and authorities have officially opened an inquest.

A witness told public broadcaster SABC that the group realized the woman had been bitten by a shark and was in a very bad way. The witness stated there were two very severe bites, one located on her upper arm and one on her thigh.

Loewe noted that the sudden loss has left the local swimming community devastated.

Buffalo City shuts beaches after fatal shark attack

In the wake of the fatality, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality shut down both Orient Beach and the adjacent Eastern Beach until further notice. Municipal spokesman Luzuko Buku issued a statement expressing deep sadness over the swimmer’s death.

Authorities also issued safety warnings for all other area beaches, urging the public to follow official advisories and lifeguard instructions. While officials did not immediately identify the specific shark species responsible, the region is well known for its great white shark population.

Contextualizing fatal encounters in South African waters

Although South Africa’s coastline is globally renowned for its great white sharks and thriving marine tourism, fatal encounters remain rare. The coast is a destination for shark-watching trips and cage diving.

Data compiled by the Florida Museum of Natural History’s International Shark Attack File indicates that South Africa recorded 29 unprovoked bites between 2012 and 2021—averaging roughly three incidents annually, with six resulting in fatalities.

The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality has not yet announced a timeline for when Orient Beach or Eastern Beach will reopen to the public.
