Burkina Faso Army announces that it has control of the country

(CNN) –– The Burkina Faso Army announced Monday on state television that the government was dissolved and the constitution was suspended.

Captain Sidsore Kader Ouedraogo, spokesman for the Patriotic Movement for Safeguarding and Restoration, announced that the soldiers had taken control of the country.

On state television, Ouedraogo along with more than a dozen soldiers declared that they had overthrown President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré “given the continued deterioration of the security situation” in the country and the “inability of the government” to unite the population. .

They also announced that they closed the borders and imposed a curfew.

One of the coup leaders told CNN that the president had signed his resignation and was being held in a safe place.
