This is according to the fire department of the Rivierenland area. A large plume of smoke was visible in the area. The bus was carrying 35 children and their attendants, but no one was injured.
The bus was traveling on the N16 from Saint-Nicolas towards Willebroek. For some unknown reason, a fire broke out. “The driver managed to stop the bus immediately and everyone was able to get off safely,” local police in the Rivierenland area said. “The 35 children and their companions were examined on the spot. Several occupants were visibly impressed and some also breathed in smoke”. No one had to be taken to hospital immediately.
The incident severely disrupts traffic on the N16 and its surroundings. The road is closed in both directions. The municipality of Bornem asks motorists to avoid the N16 and its surroundings.
