A specialized complex for power semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment industries will be created in Busan Metropolitan City.
Busan City announced on the 20th that the Busan Power Semiconductor Specialized Complex was selected in the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (Material/Parts/Equipment Industry) Specialized Complex designation contest. The Sobujang Specialized Complex is a complex to create a cooperation ecosystem between companies by accumulating small and general companies, centering on core leading companies, and to secure technological independence.
Accordingly, government support projects and policies for establishing infrastructure and test beds, research and development, and training of human resources for the creation of high-performance compound power semiconductor ecosystems in the southeastern radiomedical science industrial complex in Jangan-eup, Gijang-gun, Busan will be promoted. In addition, various support systems such as providing incentives for location and facility investment to companies residing in the Sobujang Specialized Complex, reducing rent for national and public properties, and special regulatory exceptions will be prepared.
Busan City also plans to establish a mid- to long-term comprehensive plan to foster the semiconductor industry and establish a dedicated organization to actively support the establishment of manufacturing process facilities and human resource development. Prior to this, since 2017, the city has created a power semiconductor industry cluster in the Southeastern Radiation Science Industrial Complex and established a power semiconductor commercialization center to promote prototype production, consignment production orders, and manpower training projects.
Thanks to this, the concentration and new investment of power semiconductor companies such as SK Powertech and JMJCO are continuing. Busan City expects that there will be an economic ripple effect of trillions of won by designating a specialized complex for power semiconductor equipment. Power semiconductors are semiconductors that perform power conversion, stabilization, distribution, and control functions such as DC/AC conversion and voltage/frequency adjustment to utilize electricity.
Busan Mayor Park Hyeong-joon said, “Currently, the US and Europe lead the compound power semiconductor market, and the domestic ecosystem is still weak. I will do my best to make it happen,” he said.
