BVB clearly loses against RB Leipzig – Konrad Laimer and Christopher Nkunku make Dortmund wet

Dortmund were the dominant team from the start, but only rarely managed to create compelling scoring chances. Leipzig played cautiously and gave BVB the ball to position themselves for a counterattack.

The guests managed to put needle sticks again and again. They acted extremely efficiently and, despite the opponent’s chances in the first half, took a two-goal lead within a few minutes.

Both times Konrad Laimer netted, who chipped after a pass from Christopher Nkunku on the right in the box to make it 1-0 over the rushing keeper Gegor Kobel (21st). Nine minutes later, Emre Can decisively deflected a long-range shot from Laimer so that Kobel was unable to prevent the impact to make it 2-0. Thus, the Austrian international scored the first double in the 103rd Bundesliga game.

As in the first half, Borussia had more action with the ball after the break, but in contrast to the first 45 minutes, Leipzig had more chances after the break.

After Nkunku made it 3-0 in the 57th minute, nothing much worth mentioning happened until the final phase. Then joker Donyell Malen stabbed late after a corner kick to make it 1:3, which Dani Olmo countered 112 seconds later with a great goal to make it 4:1.

Thus, Dortmund’s unbeaten streak broke after six Bundesliga games, while Leipzig expanded theirs to seven games. Should Bayern’s error in substitution in the 4-1 win over Freiburg not result in a point-related aftermath for the record champions, BVB will be nine points behind the league leaders. The fourth-placed Bulls increased their lead over Hoffenheim and Freiburg, who were fourth and fifth, without a win on the day.

The votes for the game:

Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund): “I think today was a victory for effectiveness and the exploitation of chances. It was by no means a 4-1 game in terms of performance ratios, but of course we have to live with the fact that we are criticized for the result.”

Domenico Tedesco (Trainer RB Leipzig): “It’s clear that it’s not easy here. And especially at the beginning, I think it was new for many. Also for Dortmund themselves, playing here in front of 82,000. And overall we did well.”

Konrad Laimer (RB Leipzig): “I think I’ve rediscovered my final strengths. I’d like to continue there – like in the last few games for Leipzig.”

The tweet about the game:

Update: Nkunku increased his goals record to 16 goals with the 3:0 and booked another assist with the assist to make it 4:1.

That stood out: Can’s unhappy day at work

DFB national player Can will certainly not remember this game too fondly. The 28-year-old took over the right part in Dortmund’s defensive line of three and played a key role in Leipzig’s first two goals. In the first stroke, Cans lost the ball, in the second he unluckily deflected a long-range shot from Laimer. For the native of Frankfurt it was an evening to forget. His frustration foul on Nkunku (80th), for which he deservedly received a yellow card, showed that he was probably anything but satisfied with his performance. Can’s preparatory work for Malen’s consolation goal should be mentioned positively, but in the end the goal to make it 1: 3 was only a cosmetic result.

The stats: 763

Signal Iduna Park was fully booked and sold out for the first time in 763 days.
