The players had a day off before the women’s national team game against the Philippines.
They enjoyed this. But the plan to watch penguins didn’t work out.
No penguins for the women’s national team. The Swiss national players imagined their first day off in New Zealand to be a little different. After their first week of training in Dunedin, they wanted to distract themselves before getting serious with preparations for the World Cup match against the Philippines. The idea: Visit the little penguins native to Dunedin. However, this plan went haywire.
The animals, which are the smallest of their kind in the world, spend the day in the sea and only return to their nest on the beach in the evening darkness. There are tours that offer a visit, but you need to register for them. The Nati has missed such. “We didn’t know that,” Seraina Piubel tells 20 minutes. She laughs and adds: “We didn’t get enough information. But we’ll make up for it!”
“New Zealand has a lot of cows and sheep”
The national talent, who is currently associated with FC Barcelona, still enjoyed the day off. “I went to brunch with a few colleagues and then we made Dunedin unsafe.” She likes New Zealand very much – especially the city. “It has similarities with those in Switzerland.”
This is also the opinion of Coumba Sow. The new FCB player says: “New Zealand has a lot of cows and sheep, the people are all very friendly.” On her day off, she actually wanted to go to the sauna, but it was full. Later it went to a beach for a walk.
And has Coumba Sow seen animals? “No, but others.” Ana Maria Crnogorcevic and Viola Calligaris, for example. The two posted photos and videos of sea lions that they were able to get within a few meters of on the beach.

Love messages for Ramona Bachmann
So there is a good atmosphere in the women’s national team camp – despite the botched penguin plan. Also because, despite the great distance, they are in regular contact with their loved ones at home. Noelle Maritz told 20 minutes: “Sometimes I have to think about what time it is in Switzerland.
