Conventional fuel oil (50S) will disappear from the market by April 1. A less polluting but more expensive variant will replace it.
Today, consumers can choose from different types of fuel oil to heat their homes. There is in particular 50S heating oil (conventional fuel oil) and diesel fuel oil (extra fuel oil).
From April 1, the 50S can no longer be marketed, indicated Johan Mattart, general director of Brafco (Belgian Federation of Fuel and Fuel Traders). 50S refers to the permitted sulfur content, in this case 50 ppm (parts per million) or 0.005%.
Only 10S fuel oil can still be sold, a heating oil containing at most 0.001% sulfur. Fuel with as little sulfur as possible is better for the environment. This reduction in sulfur content has been underway for several years.
In practice, the consumer will not notice anything about these new standards. Many traders already offer the latest version. Stocks of 50S are almost exhausted.
Less rich in sulfur, the new fuel oil will however be more expensive. Extracting sulfur is an expensive process, emphasizes Mr. Mattart. However, the maximum price has not yet been precisely set. It is likely that the additional cost will not go beyond a few cents per liter.
