According to a statewide poll conducted by Cygnal between July 12 and July 13, 2026, among 500 likely Republican primary voters, Byron Donalds paces the field with 43 percent support. Trailing the congressman are James Fishback at 12 percent, Jay Collins at 11 percent, and Paul Renner at 2 percent. Despite Donalds establishing an early frontrunner status, the race features a 31 percent undecided bloc, meaning challengers and undecided voters combined account for 57 percent of the active electorate.
“Florida Republicans know some of these names much better than others, and that is a major part of what is driving the early ballot,” said Mitch Brown, Partner and Pollster at Cygnal. “This is an early race with a clear leader, but also a large undecided share with some meaningful room for movement from the lesser-known names as voters learn more about the rest of the field.”
Candidate image closely tracks ballot standing in the survey. Donalds commands a 75 percent name identification. In comparison, Jay Collins registers 35 percent, James Fishback sits at 31 percent, and Paul Renner holds 17 percent. Large shares of the primary electorate still report having no opinion or having never heard of the challengers.
Demographics, Regional Dynamics, and Voter Concerns
The Cygnal survey highlights distinct demographic and geographic patterns across Florida. Undecided voters skew female, lean somewhat more moderate than the broader Republican primary base, and concentrate heavily in North Florida and the Tampa media market. Pocketbook issues drive their primary concerns, led by inflation, property taxes, and property insurance costs.
A visible generational split also defines the GOP contest. Donalds performs best among older voters, whereas Fishback draws stronger support from younger voters, particularly younger men. Cygnal’s analysis categorizes the electorate into three primary groupings: Young Populists, Disengaged Moderates, and Establishment Loyalists.
“What stands out here is that familiarity is a major advantage right now, but the unsettled voters are definable, reachable, and focused on practical concerns that matter in everyday life,” Brown noted regarding the dynamics shaping the final stretch of the primary.

As Donalds navigates the final days of the primary, national figures continue to weigh in on his political trajectory. President Donald Trump voiced strong support for the congressman, stating last month, “I know Byron well, have seen him tested at the highest and most difficult levels, and he is a TOTAL WINNER!” Trump added that Donalds “will be a truly Great and Powerful Governor for Florida, and has my Complete and Total Endorsement — HE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN!”
With outgoing Republican Governor Ron DeSantis term-limited after winning his second term by nearly 20 percentage points in 2022, the race to lead the state has drawn intense early scrutiny from both parties. Polling from Democratic-aligned firms like Change Research highlights a hypothetical general election matchup between Donalds and former Republican congressman-turned-Democrat David Jolly, though Republicans maintain a growing voter registration advantage and a grip on statewide offices.
