With one goal after five minutes of overtime, Artemi Panarin sent the New York Rangers to the second round of the NHL play-offs. The Russian striker sealed the success of his franchise in Game 7 against Pittsburgh (4-3) and a victorious comeback after being down 3-1 in the series. The Rangers, seeking their first Stanley Cup since 1994, will face Carolina in the second round.
In the other Game 7 of the evening, the Calgary Flames also waited for overtime to defeat the Dallas Stars (3-2), on a goal by Johnny Gaudreau. The Canadian franchise won its second series of play-offs in 17 years, since losing the Stanley Cup final in 2004. It will face Edmonton, the other Canadian team still in contention, in the next round.
