Calls for caution on social networks regarding poisonings in bars

The bars of Trois-Rivières are arousing more and more concerns among night-time customers who fear poisoning.

At least, that’s what we can read on social networks. More and more posts urging caution in bars in the area are appearing.

People who claim to know a victim or to have themselves been drugged without their knowledge. However, it would not be a growing problem, according to the complaints registered with the Trois-Rivières police.

“In terms of complaints, we don’t have that many. We have counted two or three since the beginning of the year, which is within the standards of what we normally have, “said Trois-Rivières police spokesperson Carole Arbelot.

Even among bar owners, it’s hard to really know what it’s all about.

“With the shutdown of bars, during the pandemic, we know that the 16-18 year olds two years ago who reached 18-20 never went out, they all go out at the same time. It’s people who may lack experience in their consumption and all. Are there more young patients or there are more date rape drugs in circulation, I really ask myself the question”, explained the owner of the Infidèle and P’tite Grenouille bars, Alexandre scramble.

According to Ms. Arbelot, the first thing to do when you suspect you have accidentally ingested drugs is to take a blood sample. Subsequently, file a complaint with the police and an investigation could possibly begin.

This is what Mr. Brouillette wanted to do when rumors of poisoning circulated about his establishments. Since then, the cameras are viewed, the employees are on the lookout and small searches are even carried out at the entrance to the bar.

There are at least tools to counter poisoning in bars.

For example, a self-adhesive plastic film, launched by Alco Prévention Canada two weeks ago, has been added to a panoply of tips that allow you to celebrate without hassle. Once stuck on the glass or cup, just pierce it with a straw to drink it.

“The French government, as I told you, they bought more than 400,000 units which they distribute in bars and to women aged 15 to 30,” said the general manager of Alco Prévention Canada, Stéphane Mrais.

In Quebec, approximately 10,000 units have been distributed. An awareness campaign could also begin.

The most useful advice will always remain to remain vigilant.
