Can a cyst turn into cancer? Know when a tumor is a concern

Cysts are abnormal formations that can develop for numerous reasons, such as hormonal changes or infections. In general, they are structures filled with fluid without cancerous origin — however, some types of cysts can evolve into malignant tumors.

Among the most common cysts are epidermal, ovarian, renal, breast and thyroid. They are formed from a cellular process that forms a keratin pocket filled with pus. Several factors can trigger the formation of bags, but some of the most common are hormonal fluctuations, a history of acne and skin infections, pregnancy, genetic predispositions or injuries.

On the skin, the main signs that the cyst could become a tumor are irregular shapes, changes in size, pain and redness. “Treatment is usually complete surgical removal, as they rarely become cancerous. However, it is important to follow up with a doctor to identify whether the cyst is evolving”, highlights dermatologist Paula Luz, from Clínica Luz, in Brasília.

She also warns about the trichilemmal cyst, a structure that usually forms on the scalp and can evolve into squamous cell carcinoma — the second most common type of skin cancer. “However, the condition does not happen often”, says the dermatologist. Paula adds that you should not squeeze any type of cyst, as the action can cause inflammation and infection.

Cysts in internal organs

Among the pockets of pus that develop in internal organs, oncologist Wesley Pereira Andrade explains that the most dangerous are those with a solid structure, which can develop into carcinomas such as papillary carcinoma (thyroid cancer).

“The risk of cancer within the lump increases with the size of the solid part. For example, if a tumor is 5 centimeters and the solid part is 4, it is worrying. The diagnosis is made with an ultrasound-guided biopsy and sometimes surgery is necessary”, emphasizes the oncologist.

Nodules and lumps in the ovary, for example, can develop into cervical cancer if they are not identified and treated early. Therefore, Andrade remembers the importance of taking screening tests, such as the Pap smear.
