IThis is the second consecutive quarterly increase, but it is contained. The number of category A unemployed, that is to say without activity, increases slightly: + 0.2% in the fourth quarter of 2023 in France, excluding Mayotte. The number of people registered thus reached 3.033 million, according to figures published Thursday by the Ministry of Labor.

This represents 4,800 more registrants. Including reduced activity (categories B and C), the number of job seekers is increasing with 54,000 more registered (+ 1%). However, the increase recorded is less significant than in the previous quarter, when the services of the Statistics Directorate of the Ministry of Labor (Dares) recorded an increase of 0.6%. If we take a step back, over one year, unemployment continued to trend downward at the end of last year, with a reduction of 19,400 in the number of unemployed people without activity.

Unemployment increases among young people

In detail, the number of unemployed job seekers has increased especially among young people: + 5.9% over one year for those under 25 in mainland France and + 2.9% in the fourth quarter. The number of job seekers who have reduced activity (categories B and C) is also increasing more quickly in this age group.

Conversely, unemployment fell by 0.6%, over a quarter and over a year, for people aged 25 to 49. For seniors (50 and over), it fell by 2.9% over one year, but increased by 0.6% over one quarter. By region, the number of unemployed without activity decreased in particular by 1% in the Grand Est and 2.6% in Martinique, but increased by 1.8% in New Aquitaine and 4% in Guyana over the quarter.
