Humphries, Canadian-born, flew through all four innings to claim the title at the Yanqing National Sliding Center. The adopted American now has four Olympic medals.
I’m more moved for this medal because the adventure was different. I am proud of what I have accomplished. I had to stand up and fight for myself. It’s not always easy to do that. Several people didn’t want to see me here and I needed to prove they were wrong.
said Humphries, speaking openly of his fight against Bobsleigh Canada.
She posted a cumulative time of 4:19.27 after her last run.
I won’t lie, gold is motivation. But I owed it to my family, to my friends, to my country. To all those who have supported me for four years. When I received my American citizenship two months ago and knew that I could be here, I was very motivated
added the bobsledder.
The other American in the competition, Elana Meyers Taylor (4:20.81), was her closest competitor, more than a second and a half behind. She took 2nd place.
Despite a tougher third run, Canadian Christine de Bruin held her ground on her final visit to the challenging course. His time of 1:05.51 was enough for the bronze medal with a cumulative of 4:21.03.
I am totally in shock. I don’t even know how I feel. I can’t believe this is happening. I have to go to doping control and then go get my medal. I haven’t digested all that yet
threw a very pissed off de Bruin as she exited the track.
« I don’t want to go through all these emotions because I don’t want to cry. It’s so cool! It’s fantastic to be part of history. »
If the Canadian was so proud, it was because she had come a long way.I finished last in my first World Cup race. It’s crazy! The other Canadian, Cynthia Appiah (4:23.04), despite having excellent starts in each of her races, made several costly driving errors. She took 8th place on the uncompromising course of Yanqing.
« I can’t be mad. I succeeded, I am at the Olympics. So many people would die to be in my place. I don’t want to take that for granted. »
The 31-year-old Torontonian consoled herself with her results by remembering that she is still developing as a bobsledder.
I struggled the last two days and it’s tough because I had such high expectations. I wanted to repeat the success I had in the test events in October. I’m disappointed, but I also have to take into consideration that I’m still developing as a driver. This is my first Olympics
a this Appiah.
Like de Bruin, Appiah will be back for the two-man bobsleigh event on Tuesday.
