Cape Verde Receives WHO Malaria-Free Certification – A Milestone for Global Health

The World Health Organization (WHO) has certified that Cape Verde was a malaria-free country, a significant step forward in global health. With this announcement, Cape Verde joins the ranks of 43 countries and 1 territory to which the WHO has granted this certification.

Cape Verde is the third country to be certified in the WHO African region, followingMAURITIUS and theAlgeriawhich were in 1973 and 2019 respectively. The burden of malaria is heaviest on the African continent, which accounted for approximately 95% of global malaria cases and 96% of malaria-related deaths in 2021.
