The sudden death of Ferdinand Sablatnig tears a big hole in the family of the People’s Party. Gruber commemorates the father of the Gailtalzubringer and dedicated fighter for social issues.

Klagenfurt With the former member of parliament and club chairman Ferdinand Sablatnig, the Carinthian People’s Party loses a big one from its ranks. “All of us in the ÖVP are shocked by his unexpected death,” says state party chairman Martin Gruber. “On behalf of the ÖVP, I express my sincere condolences to his family – we will always honor the memory of him as a person and his achievements as a politician.”

Throughout his life, Ferdinand Sablatnig was a committed politician for his homeland, the district of Hermagor. “It’s the father of the Gailtal feeder,” Gruber recalls. “We have him to thank for the fact that people became aware of regional public transport connections – and also implemented them.” This is just one example of Sablatnig’s foresight when it comes to a modern, future-oriented Carinthia.

Ferdinand Sablatnig was also responsible for the implementation of modern infrastructure and health care. “He always put people and their interests and needs at the center of his political activities,” says Gruber. “His commitment to a hospital that is patient-oriented and guarantees the best medical care for the people of Carinthia still impresses me today.”

For 15 years – some of them as club chairman – Ferdinand Sablatnig was active for the people’s party in the Carinthian state parliament. “I got to know Ferdinand Sablatnig as an honest, prudent and hard-working politician,” says ÖVP club chairman Markus Malle as one of his successors. “Now that I am mourning him, I am deeply moved to have seen Ferdinand as a friend and as a role model.” Sablatnig has always exemplified that politics has to serve the country and its people. Malle: “His political work shows that honest commitment to the population can endure for decades.”

Sablatnig’s work has received several honors and awards in recent years. It was not until 2018 that he was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honor in Gold of the State of Carinthia for his services. His official retirement did not prevent him from continuing to be involved in the Seniors’ Association and also as a parish councillor. “Ferdinand’s death is an indescribable loss,” said Gruber and Malle. “The family of the Carinthian People’s Party will always remember him with honor – Ferdinand, thank you.”
