Unaffordable hygiene products and the taboo topic of menstruation put a strain on women affected by poverty – Caritas starts collecting hygiene products with actress Valerie Huber.

How (OTS) – In Austria, 533,000 women are at risk of poverty and around 95,000 are massively affected by poverty. Continuing inflation is making the situation even worse. “The risk of being affected by poverty is greater for women than for men. We also see this in our facilities: two out of three of our clients who turn to social counseling for help are female,” says Doris Anzengruber, head of the Caritas social counseling center in Vienna. “Their salaries and pensions are usually lower and are often not enough to cover basic living needs. We help in financial or social emergency situations.” On the occasion of the upcoming International Women’s Day, Caritas of the Archdiocese of Vienna is also drawing attention to the issue of period poverty. Because: In addition to rising living costs for food, rent and energy, women also have to spend money on necessary period products – this is a big problem, especially for women affected by poverty. “Unfortunately, the topic of menstruation is still a taboo subject – even in our house The women are more likely to ask for support for cleaning supplies than for menstrual items, even though these are everyday products for them. Products that cost a lot of money every month that many women don’t have,” adds Anita Moser, head of a Caritas facility for homeless women.

Caritas is asking for donations for women affected by poverty

Together with actress Valerie Huber, Caritas is calling for a large collection of sanitary towels, tampons and new underwear. In order to be able to help poverty-stricken and homeless women, barrier-free access to these products is made possible in several Caritas facilities. Free menstrual items are provided both in the Caritas houses for homeless women, such as the FrauenWohnZentrum, as well as in the crypt or the Le+O Waldkloster distribution point. The need for freely accessible period products was also recognized by the City of Vienna, which rolled out the “Red Box” campaign in Vienna last fall. A box with a goat can also be found at the Caritas Shop to make access to menstrual products much easier for women affected by poverty.

In addition to a collection campaign on March 8th (International Women’s Day), which will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in front of the Caritas Shop with Goat on Mariahilferstrasse 77, pads, tampons and underwear in particular can also be picked up at the following locations from March 4th to 31st Places to be delivered:
