Carlo Cei dies after 4-hour wait at Cisanello ER in Pisa

A four-hour wait in a hospital waiting room ended in tragedy on October 5, 2026, when 83-year-old Carlo Cei died in the emergency department at Cisanello Hospital in Pisa. Cei, a retired scientific representative, cancer patient, and resident of Calci, passed away in the waiting room after undergoing triage and acceptance without ever being examined by a doctor.

According to hospital sources, the elderly man was suffering from multiple serious conditions that could have triggered a fatal internal hemorrhage. The emergency occurred around 1:00 PM in front of dozens of other patients and family members. Despite the intervention of nursing staff present at the time, Cei suffered a fatal illness.

Victim's Daughter Seeks Witnesses After Father's Hospital Wait

The incident was brought to light through a social media post by the victim’s daughter, Rossella Cei. In her post, she launched an appeal seeking witnesses who purtroppo hanno assistito alla tragica situazione successa a mio padre intorno alle ore 13. She added, Non sono ancora lucida per quanto accaduto – aggiunge la figlia – ma certe cose non devono più accadere a nessuno.

The daughter stated that her father had arrived at the hospital independently, complaining of unspecified ailments, and waited four hours at triage without receiving a medical examination.

Hospital Offers Condolences While Lega MEP Demands Investigation

When contacted regarding the incident, the Aoup stated that it preferred non rendere alcuna dichiarazione sull’accaduto at this time. However, the hospital expressed its deepest condolences to the relatives and stated it is available to provide the family with necessary specifications regarding care management, while reserving the right to carry out further necessary investigations. At present, the family has not yet filed a formal complaint.

The tragedy prompted a response from Lega MEP Susanna Ceccardi, who urged that the event not be dismissed as a simple episode and called for immediate intervention by the Tuscany Region regarding healthcare in Pisa. Ceccardi stated that resources, adequate staff, organization, and pathways are needed to guarantee patients timely and safe care, emphasizing that il pronto soccorso – sottolinea – non può trasformarsi in un luogo dove l’attesa diventa un rischio.
