Carlos Ghosn, former chairman and CEO of Nissan Motor Company of Japan, filed a lawsuit for damages exceeding $1 billion (approximately 1.288 trillion won). He is currently staying in Lebanon, a Middle Eastern country, after escaping from Japan, where he was being investigated for charges such as reporting a reduction in remuneration.

According to CNN on the 20th (local time), Ghosn filed a lawsuit against Nissan in his home country of Lebanon demanding damages of more than $1 billion.

In a complaint filed on the 18th of last month, Ghosn sued Nissan, two other companies, and 12 individuals for defaming him and fabricating evidence.

He demanded 500 million dollars (about 640 billion won) of punitive damages from Nissan in addition to 588 million dollars (about 750 billion won) of economic losses he suffered.

According to court sources, the first trial will be held on September 18th.

Ghosn, once a giant in the global auto industry, was arrested in Japan in late 2018 for embezzlement. He denied the allegations, claiming that Nissan executives had innocently tried to prevent a merger with France’s Renault.

Ghosn hid himself in a box in December 2019 and fled Japan on a private jet to Lebanon, where he grew up.

He is currently awaiting trial in Japan on charges of diminishing performance, breach of trust, and misappropriation of company funds.
