Manchester United coach Michael Carrick has urged the club’s hierarchy to pursue additional summer transfers to support their Premier League title ambitions, noting that their preseason spending trails behind several of their main competitors.
Since the conclusion of last season, United have invested approximately £85 million ($114m) on incoming players, securing Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Karl Darlow. Carrick, preparing for his first season as permanent United boss after stepping in successfully on an interim basis following the departure of Ruben Amorim, emphasized the necessity for enhanced squad depth and quality. The club aims to mount a serious challenge for their first English title since 2013 while simultaneously competing in the Champions League.
Historically, Manchester United have never spent more than £89.5 million ($120.7m) on a single player – the fee paid for Paul Pogba in 2016. With the current summer expenditure currently trailing behind those of promoted sides Coventry and Ipswich, some supporters have grown restless ahead of the team’s opening fixture against Hull on August 22.
Discussing the club’s position in the transfer market during a press conference on Thursday, Carrick acknowledged the fans’ desire for more new recruits while defending the additions already made.
“I think we’ve done really good business and we’ve got really some top, top, top players,” Carrick told reporters. “We’re delighted with that. We always want to improve. We want more, we need more, we keep looking for how we can do that. That never stops.”
When asked why United’s spending levels do not match those of rival clubs, Carrick admitted he lacked definitive answers.
“Money’s money, I get that. It’s still about the football, and that’s where the competition lies,” Carrick said. “Certainly, the situation is what it is as well, whether that’s finances or whatever. For now, we’ve got to make the most of it, but we’ve got to keep pushing and push everything and every boundary that we can to be able to win again.”
Adding to the squad dynamics, Marcus Rashford has returned to the club following the World Cup and a loan spell at Barcelona. Barcelona ultimately declined their option to purchase the 28-year-old England forward, leaving questions regarding his long-term future at Old Trafford.
“He’s our player, and he’s a good player, and he gives us something a little bit different in the group,” Carrick said of Rashford. “Marcus can offer us so much. He has done, and he can do again, so in that respect it’s quite exciting.”
While several players have voiced confidence in the squad’s ability to dethrone Arsenal as champions, Carrick maintained an understated stance on their title prospects while refusing to rule out a strong challenge.
“We’ve definitely got the potential to achieve something really special,” Carrick said. “I’m not hiding from the fact, and we should aim to do that, but I can’t give you a definite answer on that. It’s certainly what we’re pushing to do because we have to, because that’s the club we are.”
