Casa di Cura San Francesco Expands Neurological Care and Services

Facility Integrates Specialized Treatments with Multidisciplinary Support

  • Advanced Therapies: The facility administers specialized treatments for neurodegenerative conditions, including continuous intestinal delivery systems for advanced Parkinson’s disease.
  • Multidisciplinary Support: Diagnostic and therapeutic workflows integrate neurologists with physiotherapists, neuropsychologists, and speech therapists to preserve functional independence.

Expanding Neurological Infrastructure at Casa di Cura San Francesco

The neurological unit at Casa di Cura San Francesco currently operates 10 dedicated beds, with plans to expand capacity to 14 beds through ongoing spatial reorganization. Directed by Dr. Pietro Di Paolo, the department manages a broad spectrum of central and peripheral nervous system disorders. These clinical operations include cerebrovascular diseases, neurodegenerative conditions, epilepsy, cerebral and spinal tumors, peripheral neuropathies, headaches, and cognitive impairments. A structured collaboration between Casa di Cura San Francesco and ASST Papa Giovanni XXIII reinforces care continuity from the acute phase to stabilization and, when necessary, to rehabilitation. Patients arriving at the city hospital’s emergency department who require neurological stabilization after the most acute phase can be transferred to San Francesco when clinical conditions allow and home discharge is not yet feasible, where they undergo re-evaluation, tailored therapy implementation, and potential progression into the facility’s neurological rehabilitation ward.

To support diagnostic precision, the facility incorporates a specialized Neurophysiology service capable of performing electromyography, electroencephalography, evoked potentials, and nocturnal polysomnography. The Neurosonology laboratory uses color-coded duplex sonography of supra-aortic and intracranial vessels to evaluate vascular risks and prevent acute ischemic events.

Advanced Therapeutics for Movement Disorders and Complex Conditions

These interventions include intrajejunal levodopa-carbidopa intestinal gel infusion administered via percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), known commercially as Duodopa, alongside continuous subcutaneous foslevodopa infusions. Sublingual apomorphine administration is also scheduled for integration into the therapeutic formulary.

The clinic provides access to targeted pharmacological interventions for chronic migraine and refractory headaches, including monoclonal antibodies and gepants.

Interdisciplinary Care for Sleep and Cognitive Disorders

The specialized Sleep Disorders Ambulatory, active since 2018, coordinates neurological and pneumological evaluations for conditions including insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea. Diagnostic polysomnographic findings guide the initiation and remote monitoring of positive airway pressure therapies, such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and bi-level positive airway pressure (BiPAP) devices. The Neurology team at Casa di Cura San Francesco continues its growth path through specialized outpatient development and strengthened local cooperation, combining clinical expertise, innovation, and care continuity.

Concurrently, the Centre for Cognitive Disorders and Dementias (CDCD), recognized by Regione Lombardia, coordinates early diagnostic assessments and long-term management strategies for dementing illnesses. The clinical workflow pairs medical therapy with dedicated neuropsychological evaluations, cognitive stimulation programs, and family support services coordinated alongside speech therapists, occupational therapists, and clinical nutritionists.
