Australian actress Cate Blanchett and American artist Jenny Holzer are among the recipients of the Praemium Imperiale awarded annually by the Japan Art Association, one of the world’s most prestigious international art honors. The award, created in 1988 to commemorate the centenary of the association and recognize artists worldwide for their contribution to cultural development and promotion, is endowed with 15 million yen (85,100 euros or 95,100 dollars at the current exchange rate).
Blanchett received the prize in the theater/film category for her refined acting, broad social labor, and dedication to humanitarian causes. Following the ceremony, she noted in a press conference: Al analizar un texto, busco el impacto que las palabras tienen en las personas y los espacios que me rodean, dados los tiempos que vivimos, presto atención a las personas que se niegan rotundamente a escuchar lo que se dice, y los lugares que silencian estas conversaciones
. In the painting category, Holzer was honored for challenging traditional art conventions through her work since the late 1970s, when she anonymously published in New York two of her most iconic series, Truismos
and Ensayos inflamatorios
