Al-Marsad Newspaper: Cardiology consultant Dr. Munawar Al-Enezi revealed the causes of high triglycerides.

Al-Enezi said in a tweet via his Twitter account: “Triglycerides… The fats in food, including butter and other oils, are in the form of triglycerides, and the excess calories in food are transformed into triglycerides that are stored in fat cells throughout the body.”

He added: Triglycerides and cholesterol are both fatty substances, explaining that triglycerides are (fats), while cholesterol is not classified as a fat, as it is an odorless waxy substance produced by the liver and used in building cell walls. It is important for the nervous system and the digestion process and has a role in the production of hormones.

He pointed out: Pure cholesterol cannot mix with or break down in the blood. Instead, the liver encapsulates cholesterol with triglycerides and lipoproteins, which transport the fatty mixture to other areas of the body.

He explained: the risk of high triglycerides, and arterial sclerosis associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease and strokes, indicating that the factors that increase the risk of high triglycerides are obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

Regarding other reasons for high triglycerides, he stated that some medications such as: (beta inhibitors / birth control pills / cortisone), a diet high in carbohydrates, and alcohol, explaining that checking triglyceride levels after exceeding the age of twenty must take a test for cholesterol levels once every 5 years, and should fast for 12 hours before the examination.

Regarding the normal levels of triglycerides, he pointed out: “The normal level is less than 150 mg, 150-200 mg is slightly high and requires diet, 200-500 mg is high and needs treatment, and more than 500 is high and its risk is high.”

Regarding reducing triglyceride levels, he stated that the main goal is to lose weight because the body stores excess calories in the form of triglycerides, reduce the amount of food in the meal, reduce starches such as bread, rice, pasta and potatoes, reduce (but not abstain) full-fat dairy products, margarine and animal fats, avoid soft drinks, avoid sweetened fruit juices and iced tea, avoid adding sugar to coffee and tea, avoid desserts and cakes, avoid canned or dried fruits, avoid sweetened breakfast cereals, and Reducing all kinds of baked goods, avoiding ice cream, avoiding honey and molasses, and avoiding alcohol.

With regard to medications, he continued: Statins such as Lipitor and Crestor are originally a treatment for cholesterol, but they have an effect to reduce modest elevations of triglycerides, and the full dose may be required to achieve this, and niacin (vitamin B3), and this drug helps to lower triglycerides, raise good cholesterol and reduce harmful cholesterol, which has many side effects.

And he concluded: Omega-3 is very effective in lowering triglycerides, and it should be taken as a medicinal source. We say I recommend using Vascepa and fibrates.

Such as fenofibrate, the trade name (Lipanthyl), and it is forbidden to prescribe it for kidney patients or those with severe liver disorders.
