Cawley and Byrne: Can Bohs and Pat’s Athletic challenge Rovers?

Bohemians and St Patrick’s Athletic have made tangible steps forward over the past calendar year in the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division, yet Shamrock Rovers ultimately clinched another league title under manager Stephen Bradley.

Devoy and Tierney Evaluate Long-Term Ambitions at Bohs

  • Talent Retention: High-profile midfielders Dawson Devoy and Ross Tierney face crucial evaluations of their long-term ambitions based on Bohs’ upcoming off-season business.

The Chasing Pack Fall Short Against Rovers

Stephen Bradley’s Shamrock Rovers sealed a sixth league title in seven seasons on Friday by dispatching Sligo Rovers while favorable results arrived from elsewhere. Despite a campaign featuring occasional turbulence for the Hoops, the ultimate burden rests firmly on the chasing pack to bridge the competitive gap ahead of 2027. Speaking on the RTÉ Soccer Podcast, former title winners Alan Cawley and Conan Byrne examined the distinct structural obstacles facing both Pat’s and Bohs.

Byrne observed that his former club, St Patrick’s Athletic, look demonstrably better than they did at this exact juncture last year, when a fifth-place finish saw them miss out on European qualification. However, Byrne noted that the Saints remain consistently inconsistent in how they do everything. Compounding those weekly fluctuations, Cawley pointed out that Stephen Kenny’s squad too frequently dropped points during crucial head-to-head fixtures.

Squad Departures Threaten St Patrick’s Athletic Progress

Looking ahead to the upcoming squad building phase, Pat’s face significant personnel challenges. Key contributors Kian Leavy and Chris Forrester have been linked with potential moves away for varying reasons, while reports also indicate mounting external interest in Aidan Keena and Joseph Anang.

They’re going to lose players, so in terms of the squad, you’re looking at that team on paper thinking that’s the makings of a really good team as well if you were to strengthen that, Cawley said on the podcast. But it looks like they’re going to lose two or three out of that and then you’re having to replace that as well.

So I think it’s going to be even more difficult because they were very close this year. Pat’s had a great opportunity, especially as Conan said, with no Europe and they’re going to finish third it looks like, so it’s been disappointing.

Bohemians Must Address Tactical Areas to Challenge Elite Opposition

Across the city at Dalymount Park, Bohemians face their own distinct roster questions. Two weeks prior, Cawley highlighted specific tactical areas that Bohs must address if they hope to challenge elite opposition like Shamrock Rovers.

Byrne suggested that influential midfielders Dawson Devoy and Ross Tierney will carefully evaluate the club’s upcoming off-season recruitment to align with their individual career trajectories. They’re going to be looking at the hierarchy at Bohs to see who they get in and I think that will tell a tale going forward, Byrne stated. I think they’re very happy at Bohs at the moment, there’s no doubt about it, but I’m saying in their future careers not having a medal in their back pocket like we talked about earlier on, it is important.

Addressing tactical deficiencies on the pitch, Byrne said the team needs more defenders. Defensively definitely they need to strengthen and I do think in the attacking areas, they do score goals, but they could score a lot more in terms of having that prolific striker who will just score, score, score and I don’t think they have it.
