A personal letter written by Chinese President Xi Jinping to his father Xi Zhongxun (1913-2002) in 2001 shows how his father’s words and actions deeply influenced Xi Jinping’s attitude towards frugal living, harder labor and governance, particularly in his people-centered philosophy.

On October 15, 2001, Xi Zhongxun’s 88th birthday, the Xi family had a rare reunion. Xi Jinping, then governor of east China’s Fujian Province, was unable to attend the family celebration due to work commitments. The regretful son wrote a thank you note to his father.

In the letter, he spoke lovingly of his enduring affection for his parents and of the many noble qualities he had learned from his father.

Xi Zhongxun was one of the first generation key leaders of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC). He was always a man of the people.

When he became party chairman of Suide County in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province in 1943, Xi Zhongxun immediately demanded that local officials stop being complacent and faithfully serve the county’s 520,000 residents.

When Xi Zhongxun arrived in southern China’s Guangdong province as party chairman in 1978, he was working day and night, visiting 23 counties in the blazing sun.

On October 1, 1999, Xi Zhongxun, then 86, watched the grand military parade and parade in Tiananmen Square (Tiananmen Square) marking the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Having a friendly chat with the central leadership, he said, “We should never forget that the country is the people, the people is the country.”

Like a willing ox, you have quietly worked hard for the Chinese people. Your actions have inspired me to devote my life to serving the people and giving back to my great motherland and those around me,” Xi Jinping wrote in the letter.

Xi Zhongxun has served the country all his life, and his fine family tradition is like a mirror, a yardstick, and a textbook. As he said to his children, “I left you not wealth, but reputation.”
