Sales of cell phones in the second quarter of 2023 were 21.9% lower than in the same period in 2022, which led to 32.4% lower revenue compared to the previous year. The numbers are from the IDC Brazil Mobile Phone Tracker Q2/2023 study.

According to a survey by the consultancy International Data Corporation (IDC), 8,861,360 cell phones were sold between the months of April, May and June this year, 381,956 feature phones and 8,479,404 smartphones. Of the total, almost half (3,498,406) support 5G.

The study estimates that the sector generated R$ 13.15 billion in the 2nd quarter of 2023, even so, there was a drop of 32.4% compared to the same period in 2022, when the segment managed to obtain revenue of around R$ $17 billion.

Also according to the survey, the price range of the best-selling cell phones in the period was up to R$999, accounting for 47.4% of the total volume of purchases. The average ticket for smartphones alone was R$1,543, 13.6% lower than in the same months of 2022.

“In addition to full inventories, due to the decrease in sales during the period, we can also attribute these poor results to the increase in the life cycle of smartphones, which causes consumers to keep their devices for longer”, highlighted the Research and Consumer Devices Consultant at IDC Brasil, Andréia Chopra.

It is worth remembering that a recent survey showed that half of Brazilians have had the same cell phone since 2020/2021. In any case, IDC Brasil projected an improvement for the second half of the year due to Black Friday and Christmas sales, which should boost the numbers.

Gray market

In turn, the parallel cell phone market in Brazil grew and recorded revenue of R$772.2 million, 4.54% more than in the same months of 2022. In total, 898,881 devices were sold, an increase of 4. 1% compared to last year.

It is important to highlight that it is necessary to be very careful when purchasing a smartphone on the so-called gray market, prioritizing the security and guarantee of the purchase, especially with regard to certification with the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel).

Expectations for 2024

For 2024, the projection is for a higher result than in 2023, mainly due to the pent-up demand from the device replacement cycle in previous years. Models with 5G should become even more established as network availability advances.

“We hope that 5G will be more established in the market and, despite the extension of the smartphone replacement cycle, we understand that the consumer intends to replace the device over the next year”, assessed Andréia Chopra.
