The English Football Association announced today, Monday, that the women’s national team will play in blue shorts, after players expressed concerns about their comfort when playing in white during their period.

The FA did not explain the reason for changing the color of the shorts in the press release, but England striker Beth Mead said last year that the team had approached Nike about a possible change because white shorts were “not practical when the time came during the month”.

European champions England will play in blue shorts at home and away in friendlies this month against Brazil and Australia, as well as at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20.

Manchester City’s women’s team had a change of color to their white shorts, as did West Bromwich Albion and Ireland’s women’s national rugby team.

The issue of players wearing white clothes was raised at the Wimbledon tennis tournament last year when some players spoke of anxiety and stress from being forced to wear white clothes.

Wimbledon organizers decided to make an exception to the rule of playing in white, and women’s players will be allowed to wear dark-colored underwear, starting from this year’s edition.
