Characterizing and Evaluating the Environmental Impact of Gold Panning in the Falémé River Basin: A Study Report by OMVS High Commission

The OMVS High Commission is organizing, from October 23 to 24, 2023, in Bamako (Mali), a regional workshop for the validation of the study report on gold panning and its impact in the Falémé (Senegal River basin) . This study funded by the French Development Agency (AFD) as part of the SCREEN project (Monitoring and control of water resources) aims to characterize and evaluate the impacts of gold panning activities on the environment of the Falémé, in particular the impact on the quality of water resources and the hydrological regimes of the river.

In addition, it must make it possible to propose corrective measures and an action plan to limit the impacts of this activity. As you know, the Falémé watershed is the site of several types of artisanal exploitation: eluvial, alluvial and vein mining. It is also the scene of significant mining activity with several large open-air mines in the upstream course, very close to the bed of the Falémé. But alongside the artisanal sites, another type of gold miner operates in the bed of the river, with large, heavily mechanized dredges. This is why the OMVS High Commission, in collaboration with the Senegalese-Malian authorities, initiated this study to effectively combat the clandestine phenomenon of gold panning.
