The former tenant of the White House could be charged in Georgia, where he is suspected of having tried to obtain the reversal of the result of the presidential election in 2020.

Georgia prosecutors were due to begin presenting their case on Monday on former US President Donald Trump’s alleged fraudulent attempts to reverse the 2020 election result in the key state, ahead of possible indictments.

Two of the prosecution’s witnesses, the southeastern state’s former vice governor and a local reporter, said Saturday they received a call from the office of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, including Atlanta. , to testify this Tuesday in front of a grand jury.

This panel of citizens with investigative powers was set up by the prosecutor, who has been investigating this case since 2021, to determine if there was enough evidence to charge Donald Trump.

“A coordinated plan” to influence the results of the elections

She hinted at the end of July that she could seek an indictment by the end of August, in particular for acts of fraud and electoral interference. Without waiting, the principal concerned attacked Monday on his Truth Social platform the former vice-governor, Geoff Duncan, believing that “he had better not testify before the grand jury of Fulton”.

He attacked the prosecutor again, accusing her of “only wanting to ‘be Trump'” and reiterating her unsubstantiated claims that he was the one who was defrauded in Georgia in 2020 for the benefit of his opponent Joe Biden .

The investigation was prompted by a January 2021 phone call from Donald Trump (the recording of which has been made public) in which he asked a senior local official, Brad Raffensperger, to “find” the approximately 12,000 ballots in his name that he lacked to win the 16 electors of Georgia.

According to court documents, investigators described “a coordinated, multi-state plan by Trump’s campaign team” to influence the election results.

Trump entangled in business

The grand jury has already recommended indictments for a dozen people whose identities have not been released. To prevent possible pressure or violence, security barriers have been installed in front of the court in central Atlanta where the investigation is taking place.

These proceedings relate to part of the facts covered by the indictment on August 1 of Donald Trump in federal court in Washington for his alleged illegal maneuvers during the 2020 election. The date of the trial has not yet been set.

In the midst of the campaign to take over the White House, the former president must also be tried in March and May 2024, respectively by the justice of the State of New York for the purchase of the silence of an actress of X movies, and by federal justice in Florida for his alleged negligence in the management of confidential documents.
