Successful test for Charles III, anointed, crowned and honored under a deluge of gilding and quiches. The only faux pas of the festivities was the arrest of anti-monarchist activists on Saturday. Unnecessary zeal given the meager troops gathered in Trafalgar Square. A few hundred demonstrators, while 25% of Britons say they want to elect their leader. Almost no one has seen fit to come and express it on the day when the monarchy exposes what is most confusing to a republican mind.
What to deduce? May the country continue to support – or accommodate – an institution that knows how to showcase British identity, history and society like no other. By giving everyone the feeling of recognizing themselves in this national celebration.
In this exercise, Charles surpassed himself, multiplying the symbols: medieval rites for the purists, a screen for the sacred dimension, Anglican liturgy but by associating the other religions, a woman carrying the sword of state, celebrants of Jamaican or Nigerian origin, a Hindu prime minister reading a Christian text, his Scottish Muslim separatist colleague in a kilt, members of Irish Sinn Fein, association volunteers… It’s hard to be more inclusive, even on the benches of the royal family where a skilful tinkering allowed the black sheep of the Windsors to cut a good figure.
Charles understood that the monarchy had to offer a mirror to its subjects to convince of its usefulness. He sent signals of openness, wrapped in a pomp that raises little controversy, given the scale of the crisis. But to “serve the British”, symbols will not be enough, it will take action. On the sidelines of the coronation, the king and head of state said to Brazilian President Lula: “Take care of the Amazon”. The kind of initiative that could limit the rise of the “Not My King” movement.

– Charles III or the symbol machine
To consolidate the monarchy, the king included in the coronation celebrations all the components of the United Kingdom. But it is through his action that he will save the institution.
