Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) took advantage of a small trajectory error from Max Verstappen (Red Bull) in Austin to take pole position for the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix.
The three-time Dutch world champion thought he had snatched first place at the end of the session by improving the Monegasque’s time by five thousandths, but his time was deleted because he exceeded the limits of the track in the penultimate corner and he will therefore only start in sixth position.
“I am very happy with the way the team prepared for the weekend. I felt very comfortable in the car on a circuit that I really like.”, declared Leclerc who, in the Texan heat (35°C in the air, more than 40 on the track), won his 21st pole position in F1, the third this season after Azerbaijan in April and the Belgium in July.
Leclerc was ahead of the British Lando Norris (McLaren), who confirmed the revival of the papaya orange single-seaters, and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), while his Spanish teammate Carlos Sainz set the 4th time. Verstappen, crowned world champion for the third year in a row two weeks ago, will share the third row with another Briton, George Russell (Mercedes).
