Charles Leclerc’s Criticism of Ferrari’s Strategic Mistakes at the Canadian Grand Prix Qualification

Charles Leclerc did not reach the final of the Canadian Grand Prix qualification, because, unlike his rivals, he did not switch from intermediate tires to slicks at the right time. After the session, the Ferrari driver criticized the team for yet another strategic mistake.

His teammate Carlos Sainz qualified eighth, but during the first session he blocked Pierre Gasly, for which he received a fine with the loss of three places at the start.

Carlos Sainz (8th): “My mechanics did a great job and managed to repair the car before the start of qualifying after the accident in training. They are the real heroes of our sport, thanks to whom I felt confident in the car in qualifying. I had a good first and second sessions, but in the final I was prevented by red flags, after which the rain intensified.

This qualification turned out to be one of the most difficult in my career. In the first session, I went to the track after crashing the car. The track was wet, I could see raindrops on the helmet visor, but at the same time I had slicks on my car. It was very difficult, but I did my best and I’m glad that I succeeded.

Blocking? At that moment, there was very little time left before the end of the session, but unlike others, I did not shout on the radio, although I was blocked many, many times. Let’s see what decision the stewards will make, but I hope that it will not depend on who shouted and complained louder on the radio.

I did my best to clear the track, but the session was running out and I didn’t want to miss my try. In addition, at that moment I was also blocked.”

Charles Leclerc (11th): “It’s very simple – when the track is dry, and we remain on the intermediate tires, we do not simplify our lives. We will discuss what happened with the team – we need to take a step forward, because this is not the first time this has happened. The team quite often makes the wrong strategic decisions in difficult situations.

I have a clear understanding that we make decisions that are the opposite of what we should make, because of which we put ourselves in a very difficult position. With that being said, not only is this the reason, as some riders did make it to the final by doing exactly what I did, but again, we’re making life difficult for ourselves.

I don’t want to go into details of what exactly we will do, but the team and I will analyze everything and hopefully learn from what happened and become stronger. But this has happened several times already.

On Friday I had a good pace, so I hope that the race will be dry, and I can bounce back, but after a difficult Saturday and starting from eleventh place, it will not be easy to do. I am extremely disappointed”.
