The Palestinian Authority’s health ministry stressed that hospitals were close to collapse and many operations were performed without anesthesia, sometimes even relying on mobile phone lights. Surgeon Marwan Abusada said the Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza only has enough fuel to last two days at most. Another doctor pointed out that without electricity the hospital would become a mass grave and medical staff would be unable to do anything to the injured.
British-Palestinian surgeon Ghassan Abu-Sittah said the medical system was unraveling and it was not stopping. An obstetrician and gynecologist working in southern Gaza also emphasized that without fuel, premature babies who rely on oxygen supply will die.
According to reports, fuel is like a lifeline in Gaza. Without fuel, water cannot be pumped or desalinated, and hospital generators cannot operate. The World Health Organization said six hospitals in Gaza have been forced to close. Children’s Aid said more than 1 million children are trapped in Gaza with no safe place to go. It is understood that although trucks carrying supplies are arriving in Gaza one after another, the current volume cannot meet the needs of 2 million people. UNRWA stated that there were 20 aid trucks on the 24th, but only 8 were successfully delivered.
