President Gabriel Boric of Chiliwhose country has the largest Palestinian population outside the Middle East, said it was considering opening an embassy in Palestine.

“One of the decisions we’ve made as a government, I think we haven’t made public yet…is that we’re going to raise the level of our official representation in Palestine,” Boric said Wednesday night.

“We are going to open an embassy under our government.”

The announcement for the leftist president, who began his four-year term in March 2022, was made at a Christmas ceremony for Chile’s Palestinian community, estimated at more than 300,000 people.

In 1998, Chile opened a representative office to the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah, and in 2011 it recognized Palestine as a state and supported its entry into UNESCO.

Palestinian immigration to Chile began in the late 19th century, with waves during World War I and after the establishment of Israel in 1948. 95% of the country’s community is Christian.

This important community plays a prominent role in Chile’s textile industry and is also involved in the country’s politics.
