(CNN Spanish) — The list of the Republican Party of Chile was imposed this Sunday in the new election of members of the Constituent Council, the body in charge of drafting a new proposal for a Magna Carta for citizens after the failed process of September 2022.

With 99.98% of the polling stations counted, the Chilean Electoral Service (Servel) reported that the far-right list led by former presidential candidate José Antonio Kast obtained 3,468,115 votes (35.40%), managing to secure 22 seats out of a total of 50.

The Unity for Chile list, which groups parties of the ruling party, was left with 2,800,973 votes (28.59%), obtaining 17 seats. It is followed by the list of traditional right-wing groups Chile Seguro (21.07%), which won 11 seats; and then the invalid votes, which totaled 2,119,488 ballots (16.98%).

“Chile has defeated a failed government, and that must be said loud and clear. A government that has been incapable of facing the crisis of insecurity, the immigration crisis, the economic crisis, the social crisis in terms of health, education, housing and many others,” said José Antonio Kast this Sunday from the headquarters of the Republican Party in a press conference.

For his part, the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, assured on Sunday that “the previous process failed, among other things, because we did not know how to listen to each other among those who thought differently. I want to invite, from now on, the Republican Party —which has obtained an unquestionable first majority in this election—, not to make the same mistake that we made at the time. This process cannot be one of vendettas, but of putting Chile and its people first, before partisan or personal interests”.

With these results, the Chilean right as a whole achieved 33 constituent councilors and exceeded three-fifths of a quorum, so it will be able to easily approve and modify regulations.

In these elections with compulsory voting, 12,483,719 people voted, according to Servel data.
