China Matters contribution: Why is Chengdu called the Kungfu center of China?

Beijing, China (ots) – Chengdu, a popular tourist city in southwest China, is now considered the center of kungfu, with over 2.8 million people practicing various styles of tai chi here. It is also the origin of one of the oldest forms of kungfu in China: Qingcheng Kungfu. This year, during the World University Games martial arts competition, martial artists from all over the world will gather and train in Chengdu.

Why Do Millions of People Practice Kungfu in Chengdu? What is the significance of the World University Games and its martial arts competition for the host city of Chengdu?

In this video, Katherine, an American host eager to learn some cool kungfu moves, goes on a pilgrimage to Mount Qingcheng where she meets Master Liu Suibin, who is the best at Qingcheng Kungfu.

Katherine also discovers that many foreigners practice martial arts in Chengdu. She learns how to swing the Tai Chi sword from Kira, a Ukrainian student at Chengdu Sport University. But how are martial arts like this judged at the World University Games? Katherine gets an overview from head trainer Liu Tao of the Hong Kong Kung Fu Team, who has already won several gold medals.
