China to conduct nationwide survey on demographic changes 2024-02-24 13:23:41

The announcement comes amid a decline in the birth rate and concerns among citizens about the difficulties of raising children.

The National Bureau of Statistics of China reported today its decision to organize a nationwide surveyon population changes in 2023 “in order to monitor and reflect in an accurate and timely manner the development and demographic changes” of the country. The research will serve as a basis for formulating “national plans for economic and social development, as well as policies related to population“, explained the institution.

The survey will take place in urban and rural areas of mainland China. The government statistics agency will send researchers to households to collect data, but there will also be the option of filling out a questionnaire online.

China last carried out a annual census in November 2020which showed that the population grew at the slowest rate since the 1950s, Reuters recalls.

The announcement of the survey comes amid a decline in the birth rate and concerns among citizens about difficulties of raising children. The high costs of childcare and the need to interrupt their careers, as well as gender discrimination and traditional stereotypes, have deterred many women to have more children or have any, indicates the media.

The country registered a population drop of approximately 850,000 people in 2022, marking the first decline since 1961, the last year of China’s Great Famine.
