At noon today, the soldiers marched to the Haapsalu castle grounds to celebrate Estonia’s birthday together with the people of Haapsalu at the memorial to the fallen Westerners in the Battle of Freedom.

„Freedom was won by our ancestors, which is marked by the 151 names on the same monument here. The sacrifice of these brave men is the foundation of our freedom. It is our duty to keep this freedom and, if necessary, to protect it,†Urmas Muld, head of the Western Chess Federation, said in his speech.

The head of chess reminded that freedom is not something to be taken for granted, but that one has to work hard for it. Muld emphasized that it is important to be ready to defend your homeland. „If we all have the readiness to protect the Republic of Estonia, we will not break at a critical moment,†he said. Mulla’s message is that when standing up for freedom, it is important that everyone knows what they have to do, and every person can contribute to this by having a critical reserve and the skills necessary to act. The head of chess added that these skills can be acquired by joining the Defense League.

The mayor of Haapsalu, Urmas Sukles, said in his speech that today is not only a day of celebration, but also a day to think about the future of our country. „Let’s do everything to keep and protect and develop our country even stronger and more successful. Let it be our main goal to keep the blue-black-white flag high and stand firmly for the future of our people and our country.â€

Raheli Luha, who won the speech competition of the Haapsalu primary school, presented the speech created as a collective creation of the 3rd b class on the castle grounds. The 3rd grade b students had written down their thoughts about Estonia – thinking about Estonian nature, children, people, freedom, as well as politicians who could make decisions together instead of arguing. „If we were all good and happy together, we would have an even better life and Estonia would be the nicest place in the world, like a fairy tale,†said Luha.
