INTERFAX.RU – Chinese Special Representative for Eurasian Affairs Li Hui, during a tour of Europe, told European governments that they need to call for a ceasefire in Ukraine with the preservation of Russia’s new territories included in its composition, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing Western officials.
The publication noted that the diplomat appointed to implement Beijing’s peace plan for Ukraine conveyed a clear message: US allies in Europe should declare their autonomy and call for an immediate ceasefire, leaving Russia at the disposal of the small territories of Ukraine that it now occupies.
WSJ sources say he also urged European countries to “end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine as soon as possible before it spreads further.”
In addition, Li Hui recommended that European states “consider China as an economic alternative to Washington.”
However, representatives of European governments replied to the Chinese special representative that they see no prospects for resolving the situation without the withdrawal of Russian troops.
“We have explained that freezing the conflict is not in the interests of the international community until Russia withdraws its troops,” a diplomat who spoke with Li Hui told the newspaper.
According to him, the representative of China was also told that “it is impossible to separate Europe from America” and that Europe will not stop supporting Ukraine.
At the same time, European officials admitted that it was “too early to reject Beijing’s efforts” to resolve the crisis.
Li Hui visited Kyiv, Warsaw, Berlin, Paris and Brussels this month to discuss the settlement of the situation around Ukraine. On May 26, he will hold a meeting in Moscow with Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin, and he will also be received by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
During this tour, the German authorities appealed to the Chinese government to influence Russia and convince it to immediately and completely withdraw its troops from Ukraine, Western media reported, citing a representative of the German Foreign Ministry. He called the talks between Li Hui and Foreign Ministry Secretary Andreas Michaelis “intense” and said that the parties agreed to continue the dialogue on the situation around Ukraine.
Also in Berlin, they told Li Hui that China should refrain from supplying weapons to Russia.
In March, China presented its plan for a Ukrainian settlement. Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang said earlier that it is possible only on the basis of peaceful negotiations and taking into account the concerns of all interested parties.
