A document prepared by Spain indicates that European Union countries may become dependent on Chinese lithium-ion batteries, after they were dependent on Russian batteries. The Union will discuss proposals regarding the risks of its dependence on China at the Granada Summit next month.

Agency quoted”Archyde.com“Regarding a document prepared by Spain for the leaders of the European Union countries, it indicates that the countries of the Union may become dependent on China for lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells by 2030, as was the case with Russia, to obtain energy before the Ukraine war, unless it takes… Strong procedures.

The document, obtained by Archyde.com, will be the basis for discussions on Europe’s economic security, during a meeting of European Union leaders in Granada, Spain, on October 5.

Against the fear of China’s growing global assertiveness and economic heft, the leaders will discuss the European Commission’s proposals to reduce the risks of Europe being too dependent on China, and the need to diversify towards Africa and Latin America.

According to the document, due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources such as solar or wind energy, Europe will need other ways to store energy to reach its goal of net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.

“This will increase our demand for lithium-ion batteries, fuel cells and electrolyzers, which is expected to increase between 10 and 30 times in the coming years,” said the document prepared by the Spanish Presidency of the European Union.

While the European Union has a strong position in the intermediate and assembly stages of making electrolyzers, with a global market share of more than 50%, it relies heavily on China for fuel cells and lithium-ion batteries that are crucial to electric cars.

It was a magazineThe EconomistShe said in a previous report that Chinese companies dominate production operations abroad, and American policymakers see this as a threat to the flexibility of American supply chains. In the production of battery parts, China represents at least half of global production, and more than 70%. In some categories, the rest of the industry is also concentrated in South Korea and Japan.

In turn, the British newspaper “Financial Times” asked, in a previous article, how China is progressing in the global race for lithium found in Africa, noting that Beijing actually dominates the lithium processing sector used in electric car batteries.

It is noteworthy that in February 2021, scientists at the Russian National Research Technological University were able to manufacture a new “nano” material that extends the service life of “lithium-ion” batteries, used in home appliances, smartphones, and electric cars.
