Chinese scientists from Central South University in Changsha, Hunan Province, studied the relationship between climate change and related strokes around the world.
They explained that “brain hemorrhage caused by extreme temperatures could kill more than half a million people every year.” The study was published in the scientific journal Neuroscience.
The study carried out by Chinese scientists relies on medical records over the past thirty years in more than 200 countries. The scientists analyzed the number of deaths and disabilities due to strokes, and they also compared the data with climate indicators.
According to the study, it is estimated that “more than 521,000 deaths are reported annually due to temperature-related brain hemorrhage.”
The study indicated that “the highest rate of deaths from strokes in Central Asian countries reached 18 per 100,000 people, but the most alarming situation is in North Macedonia in the Balkans, with 33 cases per 100,000 people.”
The experts concluded that “the majority (424 thousand cases) of acute cerebral circulation disorders were caused by cold, not heat. When cold, a person’s blood vessels narrow, leading to increased pressure, including in the brain.” “At the same time, high temperatures promote dehydration, which slows blood flow and also contributes to stroke.”
British dermatologist Justin Hextall told the Daily Mail that moderate exposure to sunlight helps release nitric oxide, which expands blood vessels and lowers blood pressure.
