On August 1, the Chongqing Panlong Pumped Storage Power Station, located in Zhongfeng Town, Qijiang District, officially opened its gates to store water. It is expected to start trial power generation in mid-December. The power station is the first large-scale pumped storage power station in Southwest China.
Chongqing Panlong Pumped Storage Power Station has a total investment of 7.118 billion yuan, a total installed capacity of 1.2 million kilowatts, a designed annual pumped power of 2.672 billion kwh, and an annual power generation of 2.004 billion kwh.

A reporter from Chongqing Daily saw at the scene that the gate was located in front of a hole in the storage power station. After it was completely closed, the water level in the hole was slowly rising. According to the staff, this hole is called the “diversion tunnel” and is mainly used to guide the water flow of the storage power station. The water storage process of the power station takes about 3 months.
According to reports, the Chongqing Panlong Pumped Storage Power Station is different from conventional hydropower stations in that its “pumping” function can be used flexibly according to the power load. To put it simply, the power station can pump water to the upper reservoir when the power load is low; when the power load is high, the water is released to the lower reservoir to generate electricity.
The staff of the Chongqing Panlong Pumped Storage Power Station said that the power generated by the power station will be connected to the Chongqing power grid through a 500 kV transmission line for use in the entire southwest region. At that time, the power station will serve as an important backbone power source in Chongqing’s future power grid, mainly undertaking tasks such as peak regulation, valley filling, frequency regulation, phase regulation, and emergency backup, so as to alleviate the pressure on electricity consumption in the region.
