Christiane Taubira wins the popular Primary, ahead of the environmentalist candidate Yannick Jadot and the “rebellious” Jean-Luc Mélenchon

The process was initially intended to unite the left, but it finally reinforces the additional candidacy of Christiane Taubira. The former Minister of Justice won the popular Primary vote on Sunday, January 30, a citizen consultation whose legitimacy most of the main candidates refused to recognize.

In this majority judgment, Christine Taubira obtained the mention bien +, ahead of the ecologist Yannick Jadot (quite well +), the rebellious Jean-Luc Mélenchon (quite well −). MEP Pierre Larrouturou (passable +) finishes fourth, ahead of socialist Anne Hidalgo (passable +), and the two candidates from civil society, Charlotte Marchandise and Anna Agueb-Porterie.

” Thank you for your trust “, said M.me Taubira, in front of his activists gathered in Paris. “We want a united left, we want a standing left, we have a beautiful road ahead of us, I am proud, I measure the weight of this confidence, we have no right to give up”, she added.

“I will take the initiative to call the other candidates”, assured Christiane Taubira, calling on socialists, ecologists, “rebellious” and communists to unite. “Our fate today calls for union and coming together. I will tell them that I know their reluctance, but also their intelligence », she added.

“Additional candidate”

The first reactions on the left were icy. Asked by TF1 what he had to say to the winner, Yannick Jadot replied: ” Nothing “. “It was a primary for Christiane Taubira, she emerged victorious. It’s one more candidacy, it was exactly the opposite of what the popular primary wanted., estimated the environmentalist candidate, in a suit and tie.

Same story at La France insoumise (LFI) where Manuel Bompard, campaign director for Jean-Luc Mélenchon, estimated that “Christiane Taubira wins an election in which she was the only candidate”. “I find this show pathetic. We are 70 days away from the most important election of the fifth or sixth economic power in the world (…) and, contrary to what she said in December, Ms Taubira will therefore be one more candidate on the left ”, he squeaked on BFM-TV.

Fabien Roussel’s campaign manager, Ian Brossat also refused the rally proposal: “Less lyricism, more concrete and humility. My candidate, Fabien Roussel”, he launched on Twitter. “I propose that Hollande declare himself now”, quipped environmentalist Sandrine Rousseau.

Christiane Taubira, designated winner of the ballot, is now invited by the Popular Primary to sign a “gathering contract” aimed at promoting unity around a project of social justice, ecology and democratic renewal, a vague and uninviting term. It should also respect the spirit of the ” common ground “ : ten key proposals co-written in April 2021 with “a dozen parties of the left and ecology, ranging from the New Democrats to La France insoumise”, according to the association. In return, the People’s Primary and its five thousand or so claimed volunteers will campaign for it.
