Christina Stürmer Makes History with Barrier-Free MTV Unplugged Concert: Surprises, Guests, and a Powerful Comeback

It is an approachable naturalness that has always distinguished Christina Stürmer. So who would be more suitable for a barrier-free MTV unplugged concert than the 41-year-old? And so the pop singer returned to the stage on Tuesday evening after a long break in cult format – and welcomed surprise guests such as Wolfgang Ambros or the Sportfreunde Stiller in the Volkstheater. A successful start for an eventful striker autumn.

Her most recent album “Everywhere at Home” was released five years ago, she had to cancel her last tour to date due to the corona pandemic, and in 2021 she became a mother for the second time. The fact that Christina Stürmer is now celebrating her comeback with the legendary MTV concert series has historical dimensions, as she is the first German-speaking woman in the format produced since the 1980s and, after Andreas Gabalier in 2016, only the second person from Austria at all.

And it quickly became apparent that Christina Stürmer still masters the large format and has her fans under control in the historical ambience. The former girl next door has matured into the woman next door who enters into a dialogue with her audience in the broad Upper Austrian dialect. She has acoustic versions of her most famous songs with her, which are intoned in a pluralistic style by a six-piece band plus a wind trio and four background singers. The spectrum ranges from the bossa nova version of the hit “Never Enough” to a piano solo for “By Bus Through London” to “I Live” in the sing-along version for the fans.

The enthusiastic spectators were not the only ones who sang with Stürmer that evening, as the artist had invited numerous guests for individual numbers, including Austropop legend Wolfgang Ambros, with whom she touched on his number “Du bist wia de Wintasun”, which he once wrote with Danzer interpreted sentimentally. Ambros was seated and the audience stood for an ovation.

TV favorite Ursula Strauss was also on stage for “Unsere Beste Tage”, while Matea bathed in “Scherbenmeer” with Stürmer. And thanks to the broadening of musical horizons through being a mother – according to his own statement – Stürmer also invited the children’s favorites, your friends, to her side with “No Fairy Tales”.

Above all, however, when the Sportfreunde Stille appeared for the joint version of “Ein Kompliment” – the hit that the striker once covered in the ORF casting show “Starmania” – the house boiled. At this point, the striker, who appeared unpretentious in a black, baggy look, had already removed her sports shoes in order to play barefoot for the rest of the evening.

A second, shoeless and plugless round will follow this Wednesday evening, the album created on these two evenings will follow in autumn, the recording of the shows is scheduled to be broadcast on ORF 1 in November. And the tour is planned for next year. The period of parental leave is definitely over for Christina Stürmer for the time being.
