Health experts say that Covid-19 can cause long-lasting respiratory diseases. Doctors say that one in five adults in the United States has symptoms of such long-term covid (long covid). Memory loss, fatigue, cough and shortness of breath are the main symptoms of chronic covid. Health experts also warn that these symptoms can impair multiple organ functions.
Not all breathing problems are related to the lungs. But it has been found to significantly affect lung function in most Covid-19 cases, say University of Virginia Department of Medicine assistant professors Jeffrey M. Sturek and Alexandra Cadl.
Most of the people who come for treatment after covid complain that they are not able to perform tasks like before and they are not able to breathe. They also said that dangerous respiratory diseases are seen after covid in people with serious diseases.
They also warn that people with type 2 diabetes, those who have long-term presence of the virus in samples after infection, and those with certain types of abnormal immune function are at increased risk.
For researchers, Geoffrey and Alexandra say, long-term covid is an opportunity to discover how different types of respiratory conditions develop as a result of covid. They also opined that only such discoveries will lead to faster treatment and cure.
